Bike helmet safety

A safe bike helmet fits well, covers your temples and the back of your head, and is certified for the speed you ride. For e-bikes and speed pedelecs that means looking for NTA 8776: the Dutch standard for helmets up to 45 km/h.

Quick answers

Do I need a special helmet for an e-bike?

For an e-bike up to 25 km/h a regular EN 1078 bike helmet is allowed. An NTA 8776 helmet gives extra protection at higher speeds and covers more of your head, which is why many e-bike riders choose one.

Is a helmet mandatory on a speed pedelec?

Yes. In the Netherlands speed pedelec riders must wear an NTA 8776 helmet or an approved moped helmet.

When should I replace my helmet?

Always after a crash, even if you see no damage. The foam inside absorbs one impact and does not recover.
