Who created NTA 8776?
NTA stands for Nederlandse Technische Afspraak, a Dutch technical agreement. It was drawn up by the Dutch standards institute NEN together with manufacturers and road safety experts, because regular bike helmets were not designed for speeds of 45 km/h.
What does NTA 8776 test?
The helmet has to absorb impacts at higher speeds than a standard bike helmet, and it must cover a larger part of the head. That is why NTA 8776 helmets come down further at the sides and back.
| NTA 8776 | EN 1078 | |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Up to 45 km/h | Regular cycling |
| Impact test | Higher impact speed | Standard impact speed |

| Speed pedelec (NL) | Allowed | Not allowed |
Who needs an NTA 8776 helmet?
In the Netherlands, speed pedelec riders must wear an NTA 8776 helmet or an approved moped helmet. Moped riders (snorfiets) may also wear one. On a regular e-bike it is optional, but many riders choose it for the extra protection.
How do you recognise an NTA 8776 helmet?
Check the label on the inside of the helmet. It states NTA 8776 together with the CE marking. No label means the helmet is not certified for speed pedelecs.
