Best speed pedelec helmet
Speed pedelec helmets are different because they are a reinforced version. You can recognize these by the 'NTA 8776' quality mark. Because these helmets look a lot like a bicycle helmet, you need to pay close attention. Bicycle helmets are often used on regular e-bikes (up to 25 km/h pedal assistance) and have a CE mark. And what else should you pay attention to? We'll explain it to you here.

What criteria are considered when assessing a good helmet?
- Protection
- Visibility
- Weight
- Ventilation
- Fit
- Visor
- Protection
A good helmet carries the NTA 8776 quality mark. NTA 8776 was developed by the Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN) and is intended for manufacturers and suppliers of speed pedelec helmets. The quality mark is awarded to helmets that have been tested and meet the standards for impact protection, stability, penetration protection, and chinstrap quality.
In addition to the strict fall protection requirements expressed in Newton forces, NTA 8776 also takes practical application into account. For example, the manufacturer must have already considered the wearing and falling situations in the design. A good helmet, for example, also takes into account a helmet that may sit crookedly on the head. The situation where the head hits a curb, which can be a common occurrence in city traffic, is explicitly tested.
This is why a good speed pedelec helmet extends further into the neck to protect against falls in these types of dangerous situations.
Visibility
A speed pedelec helmet must be clearly visible so that other road users can see the wearer, thus reducing the risk of an accident. There are several ways a speed pedelec helmet can be clearly visible:
· High-visibility colors: Helmets in striking, bright colors like yellow, orange, and red are more visible than helmets in dark colors. The GOOFF Pilot is available in 5 colors and the GOOFF Skate in 4 colors.
· Lighting: Some helmets are equipped with built-in lights, such as LED lights, which can help make the wearer clearly visible in the dark.
· Accessories: Accessories are also available to make helmets more visible, such as helmet covers with reflective elements.
Weight
Weight has more to do with wearing comfort. But a comfortable helmet will be worn more often, thus offering greater safety. The weight of a speed pedelec helmet can vary depending on the type and material used. Generally, it weighs between 350 and 500 grams. Lighter helmets are generally more comfortable to wear, especially during long rides, but may offer less protection in the event of an impact. Heavier helmets often offer more protection but can be uncomfortable to wear during longer rides.

Ventilation
Ventilation not only provides cooling but also keeps your head and helmet fresher. So pay attention to the number of ventilation openings and their placement. Good helmets have space at the front, top, and back to allow airflow.
On cold or wet days, it's recommended to use a helmet liner, which is available with better helmets. Many types of rain covers are available to protect against rain. Note that a speed pedelec helmet is slightly thicker (more protective material) and larger because it extends further into the neck than a regular bicycle helmet.
Fit
For a good fit, the basic measurement is the size. This size is indicated in centimeters of the head circumference. Choose a size that also takes into account things like a winter hat, so you're always well-protected. All helmets have a good adjustment, but not all helmets have the same shape. Generally speaking, there are more rounded or more oval helmets. This is because people's heads are shaped differently. Try on the helmet, and a well-fitting helmet won't have the significant difference in pressure you experience with a properly fitting helmet.

Why is wearing a helmet mandatory on a speed pedelec?
Since January 1, 2017, you must wear a helmet on a speed pedelec. A speed pedelec can go up to 45 km/h, which is the same speed as a scooter. Speed pedelecs also sometimes ride on the road between cars, which can make a collision particularly hard. A helmet is therefore essential for protecting your head. Many accidents have already occurred where people rode without a helmet and still sustain head injuries. Because this has happened too often, a helmet is mandatory on speed pedelecs. Not wearing a helmet? Then you risk a fine of €109.
