A good helmet carries the NTA 8776 quality mark. NTA 8776 was developed by the Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN) and is intended for manufacturers and suppliers of speed pedelec helmets. The quality mark is awarded to helmets that have been tested and meet the standards for impact protection, stability, penetration protection, and chinstrap quality.

In addition to the strict fall protection requirements expressed in Newton forces, NTA 8776 also takes practical application into account. For example, the manufacturer must have already considered the wearing and falling situations in the design. A good helmet, for example, also takes into account a helmet that may sit crookedly on the head. The situation where the head hits a curb, which can be a common occurrence in city traffic, is explicitly tested.

This is why a good speed pedelec helmet extends further into the neck to protect against falls in these types of dangerous situations.

Visibility

A speed pedelec helmet must be clearly visible so that other road users can see the wearer, thus reducing the risk of an accident. There are several ways a speed pedelec helmet can be clearly visible:

Ventilation

Ventilation not only provides cooling but also keeps your head and helmet fresher. So pay attention to the number of ventilation openings and their placement. Good helmets have space at the front, top, and back to allow airflow.

On cold or wet days, it's recommended to use a helmet liner, which is available with better helmets. Many types of rain covers are available to protect against rain. Note that a speed pedelec helmet is slightly thicker (more protective material) and larger because it extends further into the neck than a regular bicycle helmet.

Fit

For a good fit, the basic measurement is the size. This size is indicated in centimeters of the head circumference. Choose a size that also takes into account things like a winter hat, so you're always well-protected. All helmets have a good adjustment, but not all helmets have the same shape. Generally speaking, there are more rounded or more oval helmets. This is because people's heads are shaped differently. Try on the helmet, and a well-fitting helmet won't have the significant difference in pressure you experience with a properly fitting helmet.





Visor A visor isn't essential for a speed pedelec helmet, but it can be a useful addition, depending on the conditions you're riding in. A visor can help improve visibility in sunny or rainy weather, for example. It also protects against wind, dust, and insects that can fly in your face while cycling. If you plan to cycle a lot in bright sunlight, a visor can certainly be useful to prevent glare and protect your eyes from UV rays. Make sure the visor has UV400 protection and a CE mark.
